Newlyweds Kim and Alex Schneider have not just stolen each other’s hearts but also the hearts of three young people participating in the Mikva Challenge College and Career Connections program. The couple pledged to be mentors for three of our seniors, and they are all having a lot of fun together. The students love that their mentors care for them academically and socially. They work with them throughout the college application process, and talk to them about their life events and personal stressors. The Schneiders have gone above and beyond what’s required of them as mentors. For that we are very thankful.
Alex mentors Jatziri Campos, senior at Muchin College Prep. She has been given a full ride to University of Wisconsin Madison, where she plans to study Communications. Kim mentors Jermiya Mitchell, senior at Morgan Park High School and Haley Williams, senior at Gwendolyn Brooks High School. Jermiya has some really great options between Fisk University, Eastern Illinois University, and Bethune Cookman University. Jermiya is going to be studying Broadcast Journalism. Haley has committed to University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Haley plans to be a lawyer someday.
All three students are rockstars and with the support of their mentors Alex and Kim, they are definitely going to go far.
One of the challenges our students face is the lack of resources to college access support, which is why mentors are an essential component to increasing the impact that College and Career Connections has on young people. Through this program, Mikva Challenge aims to provide students with high quality workshops and resources to guide them during the process of accessing and successfully completing opportunities for higher education. Mentors show support by building relationships, and offering guidance, support, and encouragement to cultivate positive and healthy development in young people.
