I worked in some of his congressional campaigns and brought him to speak at Cornell University when I was a student there (1983). He suggested that the Supreme Court may have gone too far in Roe v. Wade, because states were heading in that direction on their own. (Perhaps he felt a bit differently in recent years :-).

After the speech he opened the floor to questions, and the audience was initially shy. He said something to the effect of: “Come on, isn’t anyone going to argue with me over Roe v. Wade?” No one did, but he had a lively Q&A in any case.
