RIP Abner Mikva. He was a great leader and an incredible inspiration. I have two enduring memories of him.

  1. When I started going door to door 30 years after his last campaign, tons of people would tell me how fondly they recalled walking for Ab. Inspiring so many people to believe in public service and civic engagement and to retain that belief for a lifetime is an incredible legacy.
  2. I was fortunate enough to have dinner with him in Springfield about a year ago after he spoke at the Lincoln library. Not only was he sharp, wise, and funny but he was 100% forward-looking. Everyone was asking him to tell stories about the old days but he was full of great questions and insights about what Illinois was going through and what we could do about it. It was an incredible lesson and a great demonstration of what public service and leadership is all about. RIP.
