A son of immigrants known for his determination, courage and independence, Abner Mikva was a quintessential Chicagoan. As a member of the Illinois General Assembly, a Congressman, a White House counsel and a federal judge, he fought tirelessly for justice in all three branches of our national government. In retirement, he remained committed to providing a gateway into government and politics for thousands of young people through the Mikva Challenge program.

To meet Abner, was to be inspired by him. He inspired me, along with many countless generations of future leaders. He was truly one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to his loving bride, Zoe, his daughters, grandchildren and his family and friends. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Let us take time in the coming days to reflect on Judge Mikva’s legacy of patriotism and his dedication to public service and independent leadership. Godspeed, Abner, and may you rest in the eternal peace of God’s glory.
