Abner Mikva was one of Chicago’s truly iconic public servants and set a powerful example for us all. Throughout my career in politics I have met many remarkable people, but few, if any, could match the sustained commitment that Abner showed to building a more just and democratic political process. He served with integrity and distinction in all three branches of the federal government as well the Illinois State House. Additionally, one of his great achievements was the creation of the Mikva Challenge program which has taught thousands of young people in Chicago how to find power through civic engagement. Decade after decade Abner continued to inspire and that will not change even with his passing.
