“The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”

Born enslaved three years before the Emancipation Proclamation, Ida B. Wells was a journalist and activist who shed light on many wrongs in her time, from lynchings and the overall segregation of African Americans, to the championing of voting rights for women. She co-founded the Alpha Suffrage Club here in Chicago in 1913 and lived to see the passing and ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Wells was an active participant in democracy, even as it tried to exclude her and her peers from it. She is one of many impactful women whose contributions live on this Women's History Month.
